Team Russia celebrated its first success in 2005. During the Summer Universiade in Izmir, Turkey, Russian students won 65 medals, including 26 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze. This victory was celebrated throughout the country, especially in the capital, where it was decided to organise and conduct regularly the Moscow Universiade for the purpose of developing university sports in the city.
